THE REVIEWS ARE IN
Former big league reliever Trevor Rosenthal has taken to the social media app formerly known as Twitter to write reviews of the bullpens in every major league ballpark.
Check out all of his reviews and behind-the-scenes reporting at @TrevRosenthal. You’ll learn about the ballpark where visiting relievers used to have to share a bathroom with fans during the game. He looked at loanDepot park with review #9 on Thursday.
FROM THE TOP
Mike Petriello of MLB.com wrote about a revolution in lineup construction.
ANOTHER TIGHT RACE
I wrote a couple of weeks ago about how competitive the NL MVP race is shaping up to be, and that was even before Mookie Betts forced his way into the discussion with a monster month of August. Meanwhile, Jay Jaffe of Fangraphs wrote about the difficult decisions NL Cy Young Award voters are going to face a year after Sandy Alcantara was a unanimous pick in 2022.
CONTROL FREAKS
For the 2nd consecutive season, ESPN.com’s Kiley McDaniel ranked all 30 major league organizations based on how much elite, above-average and solid talent they have under club control moving into the future. For the purposes of this piece he looked at players signed through at least the 2025 season.
Unsurprisingly, the Braves are #1 on his list. The Rockies bring up the rear in his rankings.
The Marlins rank 23rd, down from 18th last year.
MEMORIES OF 1998
USA Today talked to several current big leaguers about the Mark McGwire-Sammy Sosa home run chase in 1998, 25 years ago this summer. Most current major leaguers were pre-teens way back then.
WHERE WILL OHTANI LAND?
Jim Bowden of The Athletic talked to a dozen MLB executives to get their thoughts on Shohei Ohtani’s upcoming free agency. Bowden ranked what he considers to be the 2-way star’s top 10 potential landing spots plus 5 possible wild card teams.
