After their 6th consecutive victory last night, the Marlins own a half-game lead over the Diamondbacks and Reds for the 3rd and final NL Wild Card spot with 23 games to play. But the club suffered a pair of major setbacks yesterday, forced to place ace Sandy Alcantara on the 15-day IL due to a right forearm flexor strain, while designated hitter Jorge Soler hit the 10-day IL with a right oblique strain.

As tough as it will be to replace Soler’s team-leading 35 home runs, I want to focus on Alcantara because his injury has major potential short- and long-term ramifications.
