Even if more teams were sellers, we have to be realistic that the big-boy buyers would have lined up ahead of the Marlins. Cooper was done and so was Segura. It's also apparent that Watson wasn't held as highly by the organization anymore. Creative deals without much risk. Burger is controllable and has the power the team will desperately need as Soler departs - the best part of the deals, IMO.
I think the unknown parts of the equation for winning are the IL and AAA, how many are coming off injuries in the next few weeks and will they contribute. Also, from what I read, there's a few minor leaguers that might surprise us given a chance in the Show.
I think if the Marlins were more aggressive or even a better destination (team and front office wise, not location) several of the players they got could have been had for the whole year. That list of short term contracts included Bellinger and Chapman. I agree with Mr. Hefner’s point about the trade deadline…if you can improve way before the deadline then get the bats or arms in sooner.
