Jayson Stark wrote a terrific piece for The Athletic about the complications associated with implementing an electronic strike zone in Major League Baseball. The piece includes food for thought from players and managers who’ve operated with the experimental system in the minor leagues.

From ESPN.com: The “star-less” Giants are trying to run down a National League Wild Card spot.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic explains why Shohei Ohtani is still worth $500 million or more as a free agent even if he can’t pitch in 2024.
In one of my favorite stories of the season, ESPN.com’s Roberto José Andrade Franco traces Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena’s remarkable journey to major league stardom.
No Marlins made MLB.com’s list of players who have far exceeded expectations in 2023, but one former Marlin who is helping power his team to a possible division title earned mention.
The Athletic’s Zack Meisel asks if this season could be the end of the road for Guardians manager Terry Francona. Whenever he retires, Tito won’t have to wait long to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Sam Blum and Levi Weaver of The Athletic collaborated on a piece about the impact Shohei Ohtani’s torn UCL will have on his upcoming free agency. The paragraph below deserves to win awards:

VFTB has already established a new high for views in a month in August, and we still have several days left in the month. The last week was our biggest week ever on the site. Thanks to all for your continued support, particularly our subscribers, whether you joined us in March or just this week.
In case you didn’t check out VFTB daily, here’s what you missed during our record-breaking week:
A look at the Marlins’ current harsh reality.
With injuries forcing Stephen Strasburg into retirement, a look at the worst mega-deals given out by clubs since Kevin Brown became the sport’s first $100 million man in 1998.
With the lineup struggling and the team reeling, a VFTB plea to Skip Schumaker to return Luis Arraez to the leadoff spot.
Jorge Soler has hit 33 home runs, and Josh Bell has provided a big spark since arriving from Cleveland in a deadline deal. While their success helps the Marlins in the short term, it makes for a very complicated offseason for a low-revenue, low-offense team that needs help in the offseason.
GM Mike Elias’ rebuilt Baltimore Orioles’ have arrived. And they’re not likely to go away any time soon.

Interesting batch of stories. A few comments. I generally dislike changes, but figure the ABS is unstoppable in some form. With the StatCast box and umpire ratings shining a light on every problem pitch, it has to come. With it will be additional uniform and/or cap advertising (ugh). Since everyone under the sun has an Ohtani prediction, I will, too. I think the Giants will go huge for him. They will be done with Crawford and have a year left with Conforto, if I recall. Pederson is a FA. They are loaded with money, missed out on Correa/Judge, and have a large Asian population in the area to appeal to. Frankly, anyone but the Dodgers is fine with me, though.
