I also prefer positive promotions. Too clever doesn't work. Samson always says the team literally tried everything, the proverbial mud throwing at the wall desperation. Perhaps it's a weariness or even a willingness to try anything to attain some chatter. I understand the transplanted Yankee fans coming out to see their forlorn 2023 edition. Watching my Expos at Riverfront Stadium against the Big Red Machine was proof, as my Dad used to say, that I was a glutton for punishment! Still, it was my chance to see the team in person and a rare win was a fantastic event. I'm heading down in September to LD, regardless of record at the time, for the weekday series against the Brewers.

The “Derek Jeter forced out” line is a bit overstated, in that his track record was awful, and he seemed to want a guarantee of the same terms he was given the first five years, despite his many failures with inexcusable hires of friends like Gary Denbo--see Ken Ronsental’s excellent piece on how horribly he treated people throughout the organization. Good riddance to Derek. And frankly I really don’t have a problem with sticking the WS ring in Yankee faces. I enjoy the thought, and Jeter’s absence.

I don't think it's overstated (or understated). It's just factually stated. What has been widely reported erroneously is that he chose to leave because the Marlins wouldn't spend more on payroll. The truth is he was shown the door by Sherman. "Forced out," "fired," whatever you want to call it. I've written previously about the circumstances, including where the payroll conflict came from.

I was doing some light research today about some Florida Marlins players from the 2000's, and I accidentally found another weird thing that the Marlins FO has done. In 2006, the Marlins gave out Mike Jacobs T-shirts for their Jewish Heritage Day promotion. It sounds normal until you realize that Jacobs isn't Jewish, contrary to what the team thought.

Those involved at the time will tell you that, while it makes a great story, the T-shirt give-away was unrelated to the Heritage Day celebration. It was a coincidence they fell on the same day. Could just as easily have been a Dan Uggla T-shirt that was given away that day, or it could have been a Jacobs shirt and Dominican Heritage, and no one would have said a thing.

I wasn’t with the Marlins at the time. I just know what I was told when I heard the same story and asked about it years later.

The larger point, even if we want to assume someone screwed up with the Jacobs give-away, is that the give-away wasn’t done as some sort of joke to try to dig at an opponent. There’s a difference between someone making a mistake and an organizational philosophy that they’re going to take any chance they can dredge up to poke fun at opponents under the guise of celebrating team history.

There’s a disturbing immaturity to this, and if the organization had leadership, someone would crush those ideas ling before they ever saw the light of day--or would hire better, more serious people to begin with.

What if the Marlins went on the road and a team decided to “coincidentally” hold a “fire sale” at the team store and concessions stands that series? Half off. Everything of value must go.

Or what if they decided not to sell 2/3 of the tickets in the ballpark for the series so the visiting team would feel at home?

Those are examples of things done with malice to poke fun at an opponent, like planning Bartman Appreciation Night. Are they more extreme? Yes. But I think they help illustrate the point.

I agree. Not very classy. There will definitely be boos from the crowd! This special celebration should have been done on another Flashback Friday.

I am rooting for this team but am very

disappointed in the way the Fish front office has promoted this weekend.

Trying to be sly, funny and cute isn’t a marketing strategy. Have had a few people reach out about the “pinstripe memories” tweet they sent this morning. When people think pinstripes, they definitely think about the Marlins. Just celebrate yourself. The subtle jabs at the most successful franchise in the history of American sports are really not necessary.

Why wasn’t the entire 2003 Team invited

back on a different weekend for the entire

weekend? Too costly?

Where is Jack McKeon? How can you celebrate 2003 without Jack?

There is NO ONE Marlins fans would be happier to welcome back. It’s a shame this ownership had to make letting Jack go literally the first move they made.

Totally agree with you Glenn.
