Happy Father’s Day to all of the Dads out there, especially my own!
When I think of Father’s Day in Marlins history, 2 things come to mind:
Jeff Conine homered and drove in 4 runs in a 7-5 win over the Angels in Anaheim on Father’s Day 2005. It was an emotional day, as Mr. Marlin had a big afternoon with his father Jerry, who was battling prostate cancer, in the ballpark.

And it was on Father’s Day 2011 that manager Edwin Rodriguez resigned prior to a game against the Rays at Tropicana Field. Having ended May 31-22 and 2nd in the NL East, only 2 games behind the Phillies, the Marlins were mired in a stretch in which they had lost 9 in a row and 17 of 18 to fall 12 1/2 games back and into last place when the first Puerto Rican-born manager in ML history decided to step down. He’d be replaced a day later by Jack McKeon, who guided the club for the remainder of 2011.
Edwin, who is now managing in Mexico, is a good man and a good baseball man, truly one of my personal favorites during my 15 years with the Marlins.

Now, on to our regularly scheduled week in review…
From The New Yorker, the remarkable story of Daniel Bard’s 2 major league comebacks.
The Athletic talks with author Michael Lewis 20 years after the release of Moneyball, arguably the most influential baseball book ever written.
David Freese, a St. Louis native who who will forever be remembered in his hometown for his 2011 post-season heroics, has declined induction into the Cardinals Hall of Fame.
I’ve been saying for a while the Royals are lucky to have the Athletics. Oakland’s historically horrible start allowed Kansas City’s futility to stay under the radar. Unfortunately for the Royals, the A’s have picked up the pace, and now the focus has shifted their way.
Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci wrote about the lengths to which teams are going to see if opponents are tipping pitches and the amount of self-scouting going on to prevent their own pitchers from offering tells.
With the MLB Draft getting underway July 9, MLB.com’s latest mock draft has LSU Tigers going #1 and #2 and the Marlins selecting a college shortstop.
