What does he bring that Kim did not.

I think the ultimate answer is he spent 2 years as second in command for a team that wins on a shoestring budget. That’s what Sherman wants to do. I don’t think this hiring bodes well for people who are anticipating the Marlins’ payroll rising substantially in the years ahead. If they’re not going to spend to improve at catcher, first base, shortstop, in the outfield or at DH and you’re waiting for the new POBO to build a scouting and player development juggernaut, the next few years may be a challenge on the field. It would have been one thing to have started this process in 2017, when he bought the team. He actually tried to but failed under Jeter. Beginning it as he starts year 7 of ownership is tough.

So she spent one year with a small market team and made some great trades. Imho as usual women held to a higher standard of perfection.

As I said on a radio show on which I appeared earlier, if you'd have brought in an Andrew Friedman, for example, and asked Kim to work beneath him, I could have understood an owner making that call. She may not have, but as an objective 3rd party, I would have. And I think most would have. But they didn't hire Andrew Friedman.

That's not to say he might not be great. But his resume and the degree of ultimate accountability he's faced to date in his career pale in comparison to Kim's.

He might be the next Theo Epstein. Time will tell.

Well, he was in middle school when Kim was assistant GM of a Yankees team that won 3 straight World Series. Does that count for something?

Your question would be a great one for someone to ask the owner when he makes his annual appearance in front of the media on the first day of spring training workouts.

You make an interesting point. Bendix has much less experience than Ng. How do we know he’s better than her?

I absolutely loved your succinct three-paragraph summary introduction to the article. You were prescient (and deserve to make that clear) regarding the organizations to focus upon in a future front office hire like this. I am thrilled that, in addition to the traits, assets, and mindset that Bendix brings to the Marlins, he looks like the young go-getter that I wanted. We need a long-term approach to organizational culture and for the tangible obstacles Miami faces. Bendix can now be fully engaged finding "his" GM for the foreseeable future. I'm quite sanguine because it's the right foundational move, to my mind.

Unless you have some exec you’re afraid you’re going to lose to a bigger title, I’m not sure you need a GM when the president of baseball ops is the ultimate decision maker. It’s just a title you have to pay someone extra to hold.

The Phillies have a GM under Dave Dombrowski. You ever hear about him? The Dodgers have a GM under Andrew Friedman. You ever hear about him? The Red Sox had a GM under Chaim Bloom. You ever hear about him? He wasn’t even considered for the top job when Bloom was fired.

Not saying Sherman won’t give someone the title. Maybe there’s someone Bendix wants to bring in, and that’s the promotion that makes it possible to get him or her out of their current contract with a different club. But it seems extraneous to me, and we’re dealing with an owner who wants to make sure people turn off every light when they leave a room in the ballpark.

Good point about the GM position. My thought is the need for an understudy for continuity insurance and for Bendix to organize the FO as he wishes. I hope Sherman gives him a wide latitude - a new era starting with a you g go-getter with a fresh organizational layout for the long-term.

Glenn, I feel really good about this. Sherman needs to get out of the way and take the Steven Ross approach and give the kid the money and other support he needs to build a sustainable long-term winning franchise.

This is Sherman's opportunity to build the winner he's talking about, like you said, I do hope he takes that opportunity. Go Marlins!
