Padres fans celebrated the anniversary of an NL Pennant this week and, to this day, owe a debt to the 2 men who laid the groundwork for that season and all that's happened since in San Diego
My favorite aspiring young broadcaster @ryanschlessinger snags an interview with my all time favorite radio broadcaster @glenngeffner who always makes time to talk baseball with young mentees
Thanks, Michelle. I remember going to major league games in various cities when I was young and looking up at the broadcast booths and dreaming I might one day have the chance to work up there. I think about what it would have meant to 15-year-old me to talk with and learn from one of the people who was up there then.
I didn’t realize that the Red Sox were part of your career. Would love to hear more about that, I just sent your article about the Padres to my 8 years old grandson. He’s a big fan. And the 10 year old crazy Red Sox fan. I’m expanding my fandom!
I have 5 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. Baseball has been a family interest for generations. The kids grew up in South Florida and 3 are still here. My son (their dad) was a huge Marlins fan and one of the boys here would say he’s a fan but not a great baseball follower. My grandson in Connecticuts Dad and Grandpa are huge Red Sox fans and he is devoted as well. My second grandson has been a Padres fan for a few years (why-we don’t know!). My granddaughter is a huge Yankees fan-- that’s historical family. Needless to say our family baseball chat is colorful!
I am going to turn 30 in May. I have cerebral palsy, which has me using a wheelchair since birth however, I’m very active in baseball in the Northeast working with the New York Boulders since day one however, I do other things including clubhouse, security work for people with disabilities and intern mentoring, and I help with broadcasting as needed Still looking for that first chance to break into broadcasting. I am a big Yankee fan, so of course my broadcasting heroes include Michael Kay John Sterling Suzyn Waldman. I also enjoy listening to Tampa rays I have also done some back up work for some softball games at my college I also have really enjoyed listening to you and following your career as I find much inspiration from you as well. I remember many of time listening to you with JP or Jeff Nelson. Please excuse any typos, as I’m using a voice recognition software.
Thanks for sharing your inspirational story, John. Do you have a sample of your play-by-play you’d be willing to share? You can email me at glenn@glenngeffner.com.
I love your insight, especially the article about what it’s like to travel with a big league team as a hopeful play-by-play broadcaster one day myself I really enjoy hearing your experiences especially because I have a physical disability and I’m not gonna let that stop me. What are game days like and how if any do you prepare differently for a home game day as opposed to a game down the road thank you for your amazing content, also, how do you decide what restaurants and what hotels to stay at obviously the hotel is something you can’t choose I know, but how do you choose the restaurants?
Great questions, John. Rather than answer them briefly here, I'd like to devote a full piece to answering them at some point in the near future. I promise to get to them. I'd also love to hear more about your story and your aspirations.
Excellent article Glen thanks. Unfortunately The marlins leadership is not capable of doing it the same way San Diego did. They are incapable and unknowledgeable. Sad but true. Great article again
Thank you so much, Rigoberto. It was a privilege for me to be a part of what John and Larry did in San Diego many years ago.
I have seen a team go from the absolute bottom—both on and off the field—to near the top. Because of personal experience, I know it can be done. But, as you say, it requires the right people, the right ideas and the right implementation. I’m an optimist by nature, but it’s gotten harder to believe the last few years.
That group had people like John and Larry, Kevin Towers, Charles Steinberg, Mike Dee, Sam Kennedy, Theo Epstein and many others who are well-known in Baseball circles and, in some cases, among fans. This group doesn’t.

I enjoyed taking with Ryan. Thanks, Michelle.
You are so kind and giving of your time to help young people succeed. Thanks so much. (See John above too!)

You should turn your grandson into a Marlins fan

Wonderful Article Glenn!
Appreciate it, Bob.
