The Marlins have a trip to the playoffs on the line over their final 9 games. But while October baseball is the ultimate prize, there are several other things for Marlins fans to keep an eye on—individually and collectively—over the next week and a half.
Among them:
At 79-74, the Marlins need 3 wins in their last 9 games to finish a full season above .500 for the first time since they went 87-75 in 2009.
The Marlins are 25-24 against the NL East with 3 games left against the Mets next week. By winning 2 of 3 at Citi Field, they’d finish a full season with a winning record against their division for the first time since 2010, when they went 37-35. The Marlins were 21-19 against the NL East in the abbreviated 2020 season. As for this year, it’s worth noting that Miami is 11-2 against the last-place Nationals and 14-22 against the rest of the East (4-9 against the Braves, 3-7 against the Mets and 7-6 against the Phillies.
At 31-13 in one-run games, the Marlins are 4 one-run wins shy of matching the single-season club record of 35 set in 2014. They won 32 games by a single run in 1997 and 2000. Miami’s .705 winning percentage in games decided by a single run is the highest in all of Baseball. Only the Reds have more one-run wins with 34, although Cincinnati has also lost a major league-high 26 one-run contests.
The Marlins pitching staff is 34 strikeouts shy of establishing a single-season franchise record for the 2nd consecutive season. The 2022 Marlins fanned 1,437. This year’s club is at 1,404—2nd-most in club history—with 9 games remaining. The Marlins’ average of 9.31 strikeouts per 9 innings should shatter last year’s club record of 9.0. Only the Braves have recorded more strikeouts than the Marlins in the NL this season. The Marlins have never finished a season ranked as high as 2nd in the NL in K’s.
