In their weekly team-by-team MLB power rankings unveiled Monday, The Athletic listed an “unsung hero” for every team.
They explained their criteria: “These guys aren’t in the headlines every day. They aren’t getting dealt for a package of premium prospects. They aren’t even players, necessarily. We’re talking about any person in each organization who has played a significant part in helping the whole succeed this season.”
Their list was made up mostly of players, but it included a couple of executives and even a mascot. Yes, they saluted Stomper, the lovable Athletics elephant, who they credited with providing more smiles than the hometown team.
Billy the Marlin received no such consideration.
The Athletic’s choice for the Marlins was, in my opinion, lazy.
