It was undoubtedly Kim Ng’s biggest move of the winter, acquiring reigning AL batting champion Luis Arraez from the Twins in exchange for Pablo Lopez and prospects Jose Salas and Byron Chourio.
While Arraez has been a great addition to the Marlins lineup and appears headed to the 3rd batting title in club history—and the 20-year-old shortstop Salas and 18-year-old outfielder Chourio have both seen their prospect stars diminish during disappointing debut seasons in the Twins organization—Lopez, the talented righthander who often seemed just on the cusp of greatness during all or part of 5 seasons in Miami, has elevated his game to new heights in Minnesota.
The 27-year-old Venezuelan got off to a hot start, logging a 1.73 ERA in his first 4 starts and earning a 4-year, $73.5 million contract extension in April. From late in the season’s opening month through mid-July, he fell off to a 4.96 ERA over his next 15 starts yet still earned selection to his first All-Star team.
But beginning July 20, Lopez is 5-3 with a 2.42 ERA, allowing 2 runs or fewer in 8 of his last 11 starts.
