There’s no time for sentimentality at VIEW FROM THE BLEACHERS. More than 24 hours have passed since the Marlins’ 2023 season ended with a Wild Card series sweep at the hands of the Phillies, so it’s time to initiate a look ahead to 2024 with part one of a multi-part series in which we’ll look at burning questions the Marlins will need to answer this offseason that could define their short- and long-term future.
#1: WILL THE MARLINS SIGN GENERAL MANAGER KIM NG TO A CONTRACT EXTENSION?
Reports indicate Kim Ng’s contract expires at the end of 2023. And before the front office dives head-first into the work of reloading for 2024, the general manager's status will have to be resolved.
Whether or not owner Bruce Sherman wants her to continue the work she’s started shouldn’t even be a question. So an Ng extension should be a formality. But will it be?
By all accounts, Ng has done a terrific job as Marlins general manager, particularly if you focus on decisions made following Derek Jeter’s dismissal by Sherman in February of 2022.
Jeter, not Ng, was the final decision maker on baseball matters until his departure, and that certainly includes the disastrous Avisail Garcia signing in November of 2021.
